The Halfway Point

Not counting the 3 pre-season games, Tech is now halfway through the season, sitting pretty at 3-1. Honesty, if I had been offered 3-1 at the very beginning, I would have gladly accepted it seeing how the 2 road games were in Lincoln and Austin.

Although disappointed with the overall effort of the players and coaches on Saturday, I am still proud of this years team. Even if Tech had not made any mistakes, Texas is still 7-10 points better on that day, no doubt. Give Texas credit - they played the role of an upper-echelon team, while Tech is learning the hard way about how difficult it is to move up to that level of competition.

The top 10, especially the top 5, is a whole different realm of reality. It took Texas a while before they were ready for it, and I expect the same for Tech. It won't happen overnight, but it will definitely happen in a few years.

Tech has 4 games remaining, and oddly enough, the 2 road games are supposed to be "gimmes", although I don't look at it that way. It will be crucial for Tech to come out in Waco and really set the tone early on in that game for the second half of the season. Honestly, I don't think the Ags stand a chance in Lubbock, and for some reason, OU scares me a bit.

Tech will be favored to win all all 4, but anything short of finishing 10-1 will ruin the season for me.

It's refreshing to see that you have set the bar so high for your team, and I like your viewpoint of factoring out the "preseason" to come up with a barometer for the midpoint of the season.

I have a hard time figuring out how you have concluded that A&M has no chance in Lubbock, but OU scares you (not that it sounds like you've even convinced yourself of that).

I fully realize that common opponents is a very sketchy way to predict an upcoming game, but it's all we've got, so take a look at this:

Tech beat Nebraska by 3
A&M beat Baylor in OT
Nebraska beat Baylor by 9
OU beat Baylor in OT
Colorado crushed A&M
Tech wiped out KSU
A&M beat KSU by 2
Missouri killed Nebraska
Missouri squeaked by Iowa St and Ok St
Missouri got stomped by Texas
Tech got stomped by Texas
Colorado got stomped by Texas
OU got stomped by Texas

What am I drawing from all of this? Well, obviously, Texas is head and shoulders above the entire conference, including Colorado-the clear leader of the North. Kansas, Iowa St, and Ok State are doormats.

K-State, Missouri, Nebraska, OU, A&M, Baylor, Colorado and Tech are the middle of the pack in the Big 12. I am not saying all of those teams are even, I am just saying they represent the middle of the pack......Tech and CU are at the top of this pack, but any of them could beat the other on any given day.

So, Tech is sitting pretty at 3-1, and A&M is also sitting at 3-1 (not as pretty, but still 3-1). Both teams are likely to be 4-1 headed into the Roosterbowl matchup. I give the Aggies a good chance in Lubbock. Make no mistake, Tech will be favored by 14 points or more, but it wouldn't be the first time that the ranked favorite has been knocked down a peg, especially in Lubbock.

You can feebily attempt to rationalize this any way you like, but it comes down to this: The Ags are simply not that good this year. Period.

Coupled with that, the game is in the HUB. Case closed.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne announced today that Texas A&M will cancel its annual football contest against Texas Tech University this year. "We're just not that good this year", Byrne stated, "and besides, the game is in Lubbock." Anonymous sources told the Associated Press that Blake Hall stating "case closed" was also a major factor in A&M's decision to cancel the road trip.

You need to learn how to channel your anger and frustration to the source:Coach Fraud; not me.

You sound like a Clintonite - let's blame someone else for his perjury...

Magnum said...

anger and frustration? who's angry and frustrated? you're barking up the wrong tree, or need to look in the mirror. I am very hopeful and positive about A&M's outlook for saving the season....the eternal Aggie optimist!

I am saying my team could beat anyone on any given day, and you are using negative words and phrases like "feeble" and "simply not that good" and "Fraud" and "perjury" and "Clinton". Who's angry and frustrated here??

Besides, although it hasn't looked all that great, the reality is, Ags are only 1 game off of where I predicted at this point in the season. Tek is exactly where I predicted.

bake said...

Speaking of predictions, that was quite a "defining" moment on Saturday for the Ickgies.

Fraud is laughing all the way to the bank. Is it all guaranteed money for him?

How is it possible that your team has gotten worse than it was last year?

bake said...

Uh, oh, I shouldn't have asked that one. I sense another big Ag injury excuse post coming. I can see the title now: "Reggie's linguistic coach sprains ankle - done for the year"

Well, anything to offset reality I guess.

I have asked that question several times. Our offense is about the same....less consistent, but not much worse.

The defense is significantly worse, and I don't know how that happened. We lost both starting corners, but I really thought Danny Gorrer was supposed to be a great replacement..better than what we had. Turns out he is quite a liability, along with the rest of the secondary. They have improved slowly through the season, and with the red shirt off Devin Gregg, he should improve a little each week. Who knows.

Blake,

Your arrogance after being completely embarrassed on Saturday is comical. I kind of thought you would lay low this week.

Truthfully, I am a little embarrassed as well. I want to apologize for comparing the Raiders to the Houston Cougars. This comparison was completely unfair to Jack Pardee and the Cougar fans. The cougars were more competitive in big games and they won more (9 wins in '89 and 10 on '90)

Leach is the fraud. He couldn't hold Pardee's jockstrap.

The best part of watching Leach coach is when he gets frustrated and desperate; and starts going for it on 4th down every time. I also like when he leaves Cody Hodges in the game when he is down by 40 points so that he can be sacked 3 times in a row. Poor Bastard!

Time to lay off the Krylon, T-Bag. You're really not making any sense.

BTW: I've asked you several times if you're coming up to the HUB for your biennial ass-kicking, and I still haven't received confirmation.

Magnum said...

you are really lashing out here Blake. Why all the venom? It's just weird that Tech got their asses handed to them, and your take was that A&M sucks. Oh, wait a minute, I almost forgot, that's the standard response...my bad.

blake,

I am desperately trying to find a way to make it to Lubbock. It was great watching the Tech fans eat crow last year whn the ags won.

Unfortunately, I have some family conflicts that may make it tough. We will see.

bake said...

Trying to find a way to Lubbock? It's easy - pack your tampons and hitch a ride with Joe and Rob.

Family conflicts? I think Joe is the only person who can use that excuse, and he'll be there.

Oh, I never said the Ags suck. I merely pointed out that they are mediocre at best. Reggie has been there for 4 years, and the offense, built around him, is worse this year than it has been. The defense is also worse this year. All of this comes under the watch of a coach who makes more money than any other coach in the league except for Butterteeth.

Case closed.

you waited 6 years for Leach to get things rolling. and you weren't that patient with him either. I remember talking you off the ledge several times. Now you are "sitting pretty" as heir apparent to the runner up position in the B12S, and seem pretty happy with that progress. I will be patient with Franchione, just as I encouraged you to be patient with Coach Leach. Fortunately for us, YOU don't get to decide when Coach Fran is failed.

On another note, I think you blew your wad a little early on Taurean, when you claimed he was the best running back in the Big 12. He's not even the best running back in the Big 12 South.

The leading rusher, BY FAR, in the Big 12 is Brad Smith. The man you disparage, Reggie McNeal, is second. Henderson drags in at 7th, just ahead of Paul Mosley of Baylor. You should have listened to "The Wolf".

bake said...

I said best "all-around" back. Numbers don't lie.

Don't get me wrong - I love Fran. Please give him another raise and extension. (chortle, chortle)

bake said...

He leads the league in total yardage, TDs, and overall scoring, which is usually reserved for kickers. (Pegram is 3rd behind Trlica)

Magnum said...

chuck weatherspoon was really good too....don't forget about Spoon.

bake said...

The Spoon! He may be selling insurance with Mark Farris.

Magnum said...

Henderson will be mowing Mark Farris' grass in 2 years......or growing grass with Bam Morris.

bake said...

Wow - spoken like a true Hangartner

Magnum said...

huh? oh...the race card.

Nice try Reverend Jackson.

Blake, I have finally figured out why Joe likes you. Like several good friends of mine, you have a bizarre and quirky sense of humor that seems dorky and idiotic at first...but once you get used to it, there is a certain originality to it.

With that being said, I am disappointed that you have chosen to abandon this originality with your cheap rip off of my "why does this guy deserve a raise?" bit.

We all know that I started this bit 3 years ago by tracking Mike leach's record vs. Spike Dykes. I guess I should be flattered, but quite frankly, I expected more out of you.
