COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M punt returner and backup safety Jordan Chambless suffered a season-ending torn right ACL Saturday, coach Dennis Franchione said Tuesday.

Marquis Carpenter or Chad Schroeder will return punts, Franchione said. Filling in at safety will be freshman Devin Gregg, who started at nickelback Saturday, junior walk-on John Ray, who has regularly served as the Aggies’ 12th Man representative, and sophomore cornerback Brock Newton.

Chambless will be the eighth A&M player to undergo surgery this season, Franchione said. The redshirt freshman hurt his knee early in the second half against Oklahoma State but continued to play and didn’t realize the extent of the injury until after the game.

Chambless is also a standout pitcher on the Aggies’ baseball team and a pro prospect. Franchione said he has not discussed with Chambless how this injury might affect his future as a two-sport athlete.

Wow - another shot to the gut for the Ags. How many injured key players is that now?

Isn't Schroeder the fastest guy on the team - with what, like a 4.28 or something?

He would do just fine back there.

Not that anyone has noticed, but RJ (replacing Amendola) is returning punts now for Tech (unless the game is out of hand, and then the FR Eric Morris gets his shots)

Ags are adapting well to the injury situation. It brings more youth to the forefront, but that will be good in the long run. The old guard wasn't really making it happen anyway. I hate to say that, because I don't want it to sound like I don't feel for the injured players. It's devastating for that to happen to them.

I did notice that Amendola wasn't returning punts anymore. I guess he doesn't have that gamebreaking Rodney Blackshear/Wes Welker ability.

RJ can score from anywhere, anytime he touches the ball. Amendola is fast, squirmy, and even quick, but RJ is in a class of his own it seems. He's more of a playmaker, and that's no slap to Amendola either.
